About UNIVEGA
Did you know how mountain bikes came about? At the start of the 70s, a small, wild group of bike fanatics hit on the fabulous idea to race down the gravel tracks of Mount Tamalpais in California on old cruisers with thick balloon tyres. As their sturdy steel machines were extremely heavy, these early mountain bikers were of course die-hard downhillers.
The constantly growing community of fans of riding off solid roads started to develop ever more robust off-road and uphill bikes. So started the unstoppable rise of the mountain bike to a mass movement.
One of its founders was Ben Lawee. In 1970, he founded UNIVEGA and turned his little bike shop in Long Beach, California, into an internationally successful company. By the way, the now legendary UNIVEGA Alpina Sport was one of the first ever mass-produced mountain bikes.
